The girls’ golf team at Omaha North has grown substantially since last year. In the 2023-2024 girls’ golf season, there were only two girls playing for North High. In the 2024-2025 school year the girls’ golf team has grown to nine players.
The girls on the team in the 2023-2024 season were Amani Sturdivant, 12, and Zareena Abdessalam, 11.
Hannah Kozak, art teacher, has been the Assistant Golf Coach for the last five years.
“With more girls we can actually represent North,” said Kozak, “We have good golfers, they want to learn, it’s not easier but it is better and everything we wanted.” Kozak added.
The number of players on the team has varied throughout the years.
Amani Sturdivant has been on the golf team since her sophomore year (2022-2023). Sturdivant believes “the growth in the team is amazing.”
The new players on the golf team are a mix of freshman, students who are new to North and other students who have decided to join in the 2024-2025 golf season.
There are multiple reasons the team has grown so much. The coaches create a positive environment for the girls on the team which has helped attract more girls to join.
“The coaches really push me to perfect my style, which is really helpful.” Sturdivant said.
Kayleigh Morris, 9, is just starting out on the girls’ golf team at North.
“Kozak is really nice and will show you how to perfect the details. Coach Degner tells us what’s wrong and how we can fix it.” Said Morris
The growth in the team has helped the team not only grow in size but also in success.
According to Kozak the golf season has been successful so far, having placed four out of sixteen in a tournament.
