Hopes, hoops, everything in between

Fall sports are finished, which means winter sports have begun. Basketball is a popular sport which is played all over the world. At Omaha North High, basketball tryouts for boys and girls were held on Monday, November 20 and Tuesday, November 21.

Head coach Michaela Dailey and boys coach Thomas Liechti had many expectations going into the season.

Liechti expected a great amount of competition during tryouts due to there being a limited number of spots.

“[There were} a lot of people going for limited spots, you know not everyone can make the team, like a lot of sports people don’t get cut but in basketball unfortunately not everybody makes the team,” said Liechti.

During tryouts Mynor Strong, 12, Jerri’on Williams, 10 and Ban Yor, 10, stood out to Liechti and his coaching staff.

“Mynor is just a really good all-around basketball player, Jerri’on and Ban are two sophomores that have a lot of potential,” said Liechti.

Five people that stood out to coach Dailey were Ella Holtzclaw,12, A’yanna Hill, 10, Milani Drake, 11, and Akazja Foster, 10. Dailey noticed a display of leadership, and deep comprehension of the game.

It is not solely about raw skill but about individuals who fit into the team’s dynamic,” said Dailey.

Both teams are looking forward to the upcoming season. Although skill plays a part in the success of the team, Dailey believes it is much more.

A team’s success throughout the season centers on several factors, including team cohesion, coaching strategies, skill set, and the team’s ability to evolve and adapt,” said Dailey.

The Viking basketball season kicks off for both boys and girls, with their first season game on Friday December 8 at Gretna East High School.
