Viking Bucks are a reward system at Omaha North High School and are turning into V-Bucks during the 2025-2026 school year. Viking Bucks used to be pieces of paper which students could earn if they were respectful, responsible and accountable.
“Viking Bucks were created by the MTSS-B committee as a way to highlight and reward positive student behavior” said Jason Sunde, Science teacher and a MTSS-B committee member at North High.
Teachers and staff members could give students Viking Bucks if they saw a student being respectful, responsible and accountable. A student could then go to the Viking Center during lunch and use the Viking Bucks to get a snack from the Viking store.
However, for the 2025-2026 school year, the MTSS-B committee at North has decided to change from paper Viking Bucks to online copies.
The main reason as to why the MTSS-B committee decided to change the paper Viking Bucks to digital was because many students would steal the paper copies from teachers. They then would write their own names on the paper, going against what the Viking Bucks were created for.
“As a committee, we wanted to ensure that meaningful conversations were happening around the positive behaviors that impact North High,” said Sunde.
There has been a mixed review from students on how they feel about the change.
“Paper Viking Bucks were more efficient and easier to keep track of,” said Donavon Jeffers, 11.
On the other hand, some students see the change to be more realistic and less likely to get lost.
Teachers also have mixed views on whether Digital Viking Bucks are better than Paper Viking Bucks.
“The electronic Viking Bucks make it easier for there to be a system where students can’t lose their rewards and teachers don’t have to remember to pick up more Viking Buck books,” said Richard Marcoux, U.S. History teacher.
As of now, students are not able to check how many Vikings Bucks they specifically have. This is different from the paper Viking Bucks where they were constantly able to check their amount.
