Omaha North High School welcomed a new face to the teaching staff for the 2025-2026 school year. Rebecca Siert, the new Freshman Seminar teacher, transferred to Omaha North High School from Nathan Hale Magnet Middle School.
“It was a hard decision; I loved being there, but I was ready for a new challenge,” said Siert.
Siert had a peak of interest for teaching in her high-school days. She originally wanted to teach high school, but she started teaching middle school and stayed there for 10 years. The thing that interested her in teaching was her love for history, and the idea of helping kids.
“The thing I love about teaching and the reason I wanted to teach is because I liked the idea of helping kids figure out what they wanted to do and navigate through school, which can be hard not only academically, but socially as well,” said Siert.
At Nathan Hale, Siert taught seventh and eighth grade social studies. However, Siert was involved in more than just teaching. She coached the boys’ soccer team, girls’ wrestling team, and worked with the chess club after school.
At Omaha North High School Siert continues to be involved in more than just teaching. Currently, she is the sponsor of Student Council. One of Student Council’s main roles is to plan Homecoming activities, such as the dance, and spirit week. They also do fundraising for The Make-A-Wish- foundation, work to increase school engagement and improve students’ experiences at North. Additionally, they provide positive leadership at North and in the community.
“I’m really enjoying it so far, I think they do a lot of cool things in high school and so I’m excited to be a part of that,” said Siert.
Siert has big goals for herself and her students at Omaha North. She strives to ensure that her students stay on track for graduation.
“Perseverance I would say is a good word for it, sticking with the hard adjustments that come with high school, and I think if they can do that then they will be successful in their freshman year,” said Siert.
Additionally, Siert has previous connections to North. Siert and John Skradski, a Social Studies teacher, at Omaha North are related. They are first cousins on their dad’s side.
“It’s awesome getting to work with my cousin,” said Skradski.
Also, Siert worked under Principal Christopher Humphries at Nathan Hale.
“I felt really great about working with Mr. Humphries, I felt like he has a calm demeanor and his mindset for doing what’s best for his students,” said Siert.
Currently Siert is working on homecoming. Her goal for this event is for everything to run smoothly, be organized, and most importantly, for students to have fun.
“I am nervous, but I’m grateful for the challenge and I’ll make sure to do a great job,” said Siert.
Siert has had a lot of good buzz about her and her work at North.
“It’s her first-year teaching high school and she’s taking on a lot by doing Student Council, but she’s doing good so far,” said James Mayfield, 12.
Mayfield has been involved with Student Council since his freshman year of high school.
The members of Student Council have enjoyed all the activities Siert has done in the club. In particular, they enjoyed the “get to know you” activity from the beginning of the year.
Looking forward, Siert has a lot of goals for the next year of Student Council.
“I would like to do more fund-raisers and get more students involved,” said Siert.
With Siert’s experience and love for her students and involvement, she is a great addition to Omaha North High School.
