The Omaha North Varsity Football Team had seven wins and two losses in the regular season. They had the best record of all Section A Division 5 schools in Nebraska.
That being said, the Vikings had a rocky start to their season. On August 29, they played their first game of the season against the highest ranked Division A school, Omaha Westside.
The game was played hours early to avoid a thunderstorm expected later in the evening. Despite the teams’ best efforts to avoid any inclement weather, the storm hit in the middle of the game. The rain delay lasted 90 minutes, and afterward Omaha North could not come back. The final score was 22-7, with the Westside Warriors being victorious.
After the initial loss, the football team had a series of successes. On September 12, they won against their rival school, Omaha Central, 28-18.
On October 18, they beat the Bellevue East Thunderbirds, 32 to 14.
In the last game of the regular season, they won in overtime against Lincoln Southwest. The score was 42-34.
Their victories led to them being ranked fifth in Nebraska Division A Football.
As they went into the playoffs, their coaches were very proud and had many words of encouragement for their players.
Daniel Hempel, the Defensive Coordinator for Omaha North, tells his kids to, “play one week at a time, and one play at a time.”
He stressed the need to react in a positive manner, even in difficult situations, and to not dwell on mistakes.
In the playoffs, the Vikings had some success. With a homefield advantage, they won their first playoff game 35 to 16, against Lincoln East.
They then advanced to the second round of playoffs against number four seed, Elkhorn South.
On November 8, 2024, Omaha North won 28-21 against the higher ranked team. This upset advanced the Vikings to the third round of the playoffs.
Omaha North rematched the Westside Warriors in the playoff semifinals on November 25, 2024.
The Vikings started off strong, scoring the first two touchdowns and ending the first quarter with an early lead. However, the tables quickly turned as Westside pulled ahead in the second quarter. Omaha North was unable to come back, and the final score was 47-14.
Even though this was not the outcome the Vikings had hoped for, parents, coaches, and friends were very proud of the football team’s accomplishments this season.
