As fall sports season comes to a close, winter sports begin at Omaha North High, including the 2024-2025 boys wrestling season.
In the 2023-2024 boys wrestling season, the Vikings experienced successes. At the end of the season, the Vikings had a student win a state championship for the third year in a row.
Tyson Terry, 12, won a state championship in the 285-pound weight class. He is currently undefeated in wrestling. Terry also plays football for Omaha North. Terry has committed to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) for his future college.
Dan Carlson, human growth and sports nutrition teacher, coaches the Omaha North High boys wrestling team. Being the head coach is not Carlson’s first time holding the role. Before joining the Viking staff, he had previously been the wrestling coach at Hill Crest Highschool located in Springfield, Missouri.
One of the responsibilities that comes with being head coach is the preparation and fundraising for the team.
“We fundraise basically from March until September,” said Carlson.
The boys’ wrestling team has done many different events to raise money for the 2024-2025 season. They have helped with events like state track concessions, and concessions for the College World Series.
The students who are a part of the boys wrestling team help with the fundraising even when the work is hard, and the weather is harsh.
“We work the College World Series, which is brutal,” said Carlson.
Normally it is only the students who help with preparations for the season but sometimes adults volunteer as well.
“Generally, the wrestlers help out, sometimes we get some adults that help,” said Carlson.
Fundraising for the 2024-2025 boys wrestling season has differed from other years because in years prior the team did not do as much fundraising.
“I have never had to fundraise like this, the school has always picked up the tab. If I’m not making money, the wrestling team doesn’t get to buy things,” said Carlson.
The wrestling program at North stands out because of the history and tradition within the team and the staff.
The North High boys wrestling team is optimistic about the 2024-2025 season, they are hoping for a successful season.
“We have some good veterans coming back, we have some new people joining, and you never know what could happen during the season,” said Carlson.
