On August 23, the rollout of the new iPads began at Omaha North High school from the Teacher Administration Center (TAC) building.
The tech department at Omaha North High school originally was going to pass out the new iPads during students’ English classes but ended up passing them out during advisement.
“We had to kinda redo what we were going to do” (for handing out the new iPads),but since during English classes for tenth and eleventh grade they talked to you about college and stuff like that we didn’t want to interrupt that, so we started handing them out during homeroom, which only gave us about 30 minuets to hand them out,” said Madeline Kirchofer.
This overall made it longer to pass out the new iPads to students since they only had 30 minutes per day to hand them out to students.
“Middle of November we should be done, we are waiting on more iPads to come in because there were so many kids that needed iPads and so we have to wait for our bosses to get more iPads so that we can finish handing out the little bit of the eleventh grade. But we’re almost done with tenth grade and so once we do that then we’ll move on to the eleventh grade once we get more iPads we should be done,” said Kirchofer.
They decided to change the old black cased iPads to a more developed iPad with a dark blue and orange case.
“The old ones were a lower version, so we got a newer version of the iPad plus we got new cases that involve a keyboard, which is supposed to help kids in doing their work and typing papers.” Kirchofer said.
These new iPads have a keyboard in their case, so students do not have to carry an individual keyboard around. Prior to receiving a new iPad, the students’ iPad screens turned pink.
“The reason why they turn pink is because were trying to figure out which iPads we have given out and which iPads we still need to give out, and so the pink ones are still the ones that need to be switch over and then the other does not have the pink screens and those are the newer one,” said Kirchofer.
Students are excited to get their new iPad and cannot wait to receive them.
But seniors are not able to get them since this is their last year at North, however some seniors were able to receive the new iPad if they had troubles with their current iPad.
“They were alright, it was hard to type cause they were like propped up, so I’ll have to set it down like this which was kinda hard. The new ones are better cause they have a keyboard, cause my old one had a keyboard but I had to attach it to my iPad, and it took up so much space,” said Lena Musa, 12.
Some students still have old iPads since they have not received the new ones yet.
“I’m looking forward to getting a new iPad because I’ve had my old iPad since I think seventh or six grade, so it’s really old, and the charger I don’t like the old charger either,” said Josselin Amaya Martinez, 10.
