Prom is a formal dance held by a high school at the end of the school year. Prom is typically for students in their junior and senior year. On May 4, 2024 Omaha North High is hosting their annual prom at Creighton University.
The theme for this year’s prom is “A Starry Night.” Omaha North High prom committee is the one that takes charge of prom.
The prom committee is who plans and sets up prom. Business teacher, Katy Flentie, the sponsor of the prom committee, Assistant Principal, Andrew Renfro and Solan Bailey, 11, are the heads of the committee.
“The prom committee at North has been going on for years” Flentie said.
Bailey asked Flentie his freshman year to join the prom committee and became head of the committee his junior year. He wanted to join the committee so he could take the lead and make sure the students were heard when making decisions.
“I asked her to join my freshman year and then junior year she decided I was going to be the head” Solan said.
Bailey and the rest of the committee decides the prom theme by slimming down to five ideas, and then they debating until they have the final one.
When it comes to decorating, they look up ideas on Pinterest and combine ideas together. They start brainstorming ideas in January. Aside from brainstorming, they also talk to Flentie and Renfro regarding the budget for that year’s dance.
When it comes to the funding process, the money comes from the previous year and the year of ticket sales.
The prom committee is also in charge of setting everything up and picking the music. They initially find a DJ. Once they are found, they create a set list of songs to play. This must be approved by Flentie.
The day of prom, students and staff go that morning and put it all together. The process usually takes up to three to four hours. At the end of the night, they are responsible for taking everything back down.
Flentie has more of the big roles, due to her being the committee sponsor for 3 years. Everything that the prom committee finds has to be approved by her. Renfo is also a person information can get approved by.
In order to be able to attend prom you must maintain regular attendance, have no out of school suspensions the week of prom, no significant code of conduct violations and have good credit and grade standing.
