New Halloween movie starring Adam Sandler pays tribute to Cameron Boyce
February 26, 2021
Just in time for spooky season, director Steven Brill’s “Hubie Halloween” was released on October 7, 2020. Starring actors such as Adam Sandler, Noah Schnapp and Julie Bowen, the comedy horror tells the story of an underdog becoming a hero on Halloween night.
On Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts, a town’s dark horse, community volunteer, Hubie Dubois finds himself in the midst of a real investigation, for a real murderer while just trying to protect Salem from harmless Halloween pranksters.
Adam Sandler played the role of Hubie Dubois perfectly. Sandler’s accent that he played as Hubie was aberrant and no one can act like him. Hubie had a kindhearted and loving personality even the characters who would bully and pull pranks on him.
The protagonist Hubie performs acts of kindness for his fellow constantly underappreciated townspeople. The audience watch as he brushes off prank after prank, all set up to humiliate him. While children set off to the streets in costume and teens sneak out to parties, Hubie decides to take on a larger task of capturing a murderer.
The cast was marvelous including, Noah Schnapp, Karan Brar, China Anne McClain, Kevin James, Rob Schneider, and many more as well as Cameron Boyce who was supposed to appear in the movie, because he passed away.
Rather than just pay tribute to the young actor with a standard title card, the end of Hubie Halloween featured a mini eulogy, reading: “Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.”
However, as impressive as the cast is in the film, the level of comedy attained falls strikingly short of its expectations. Full of jokes revolving around repetitive jump scares, because Hubie gets scared easily. The child-like humor is not just silly, the jokes started becoming exceedingly corny. This disappointing contribution weighs the movie down greatly, but the overall message at the end is important for all viewers to listen to.
Overall, “Hubie Halloween” is light-hearted, feel-good, and entertaining movie with a spooky twist featuring characters that make you feel nostalgic. I would rate this movie a three out of five stars because, although the story had a very heart felt ending and I enjoyed it, the movie’s humor wasn’t my cup of tea. I thought the movie started to become annoying as the jokes and humorous bits started to become quite repetitive. I recommend this movie for a family movie night for all ages to enjoy.
