DECA provides business experience

Moolaw Soe, Features Writer

DECA is an organization that specifically targets the field of business and marketing. They not only help students become better leaders and entrepreneurs for college and the business world, but they constantly update their curriculum to match the pace of modern world businesses.

During the 20182019 school year, Jerrie Glassman took about 42 students from the Future Business Leader of America (FBLA) and DECA to the new business facility at the University of South Dakota (USD).

Since USD has a smaller population and is a lot cheaper relative to nearby schools, students have personally taken an interest in the universities after the trip and went back for another thorough tour.

One of DECA’s focuses is improving leadership skills this school year, DECA went to the AllMetro conference which is a competitive event where the focus was on starting business and the skill set required.

North’s DECA team is fundraising to pay off the DECA’s state leadership conference in Lincoln.

Other conferences North’s DECA students are going to include the one at the Tower on 16th and Dodge. About a dozen students from North will go there and talk about cybersecurity (the fastest growing area in business), get their resume evaluated by professionals and participate in a voluntary mock interview.

These events are sponsored by National Bank. Every year, National Bank dedicates two full days to provide financial literacy. They educate students on things such as credits, how to establish and build credit and how it could improve students’ jobs in the future.
